Hardap targets medals at upcoming Youth Games

- ■ Maurice Kambukwe

Blossom Jacobs, chairperson of the Hardap regional team for the 2020 MTC Namibia Youth Games, said the region is ready and wants to go all the way at the upcoming national multisport youth games set for Rietfontein in the Otjozondjupa region.

The 2020 edition of the MTC Namibia Youth Games, which will be the second edition of the games, will take place at Rietfontein from 16-18 December and will feature sport codes such as football, netball, volleyball, basketball, boxing, tennis, athletics and parasport. The games are expected to attract an estimated 1 092 athletes and over 170 coaches and officials from all 14

regions.

Speaking to this publication yesterday, Jacobs said preparations have been going well and they are in the final stages of assembling the final team that will represent the region at the competition next week.

“So far, preparations are going well and we are in a practice session with the team as we speak. We are also busy putting touches to the final team that we will be sending to Rietfontein,” she said.

Hardap won second place in the women football at the inaugural 2018 edition of the national youth sports showpiece. But for this year’s edition, Hardap will not be a ladies football team but are banking their hopes on the netball team to bring home medals.

“This is the second time the youth games are being held and I remember at the previous event, our ladies football team finished second. For this year, we are not sending a women football team due to unforeseen circumstances. We want to win medals and also get our athletes into the national team that will represent the country at next year’s AUSC Region 5 Youth Games,” she said.

After the conclusion of the 2020 MTC Namibia Youth Games at Rietfontein, a team will be selected to represent Namibia at the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games, slated for Lesotho in December 2021.
