Word On The Block Road safety tips for the festive season

The Road Traffic and Transport Act, 1999 (Act 22 of 1999), outlines the provisions that must be followed by all public road users in Namibia. The Act deals with regulating behaviours of motorists and also sets out conditions that ensure vehicles are roadworthy before moving on public roads.

As we are embarking on the festive season, this means that public roads countrywide will see an increase in traffic volumes of traffic and congestion. Namibia has one of the highest statistics of road accidents, especially on the B1 Road, which is the national highway of Namibia, stretching from the south to north. However, as responsible citizens we have to join hands in reducing the number of accidents, injuries and deaths caused on our roads to zero percent in the country.

As we commence with travels from and to various holiday destinations during this festive season, it is important to take note of how dangerous it is for one to drive recklessly without adhering to the stipulated road traffic rules and regulations.

This article highlights important tips which all motorists should know in order to ensure that their lives, passengers and that of other road users are safe. The following road safety tips are very crucial:

Take your vehicle for a full check before embarking on your holiday travels. Make sure that every aspect of your car is working properly.

Rest enough before you embark on your journey.

Understand the rules of the road and be in a possession of a driver’s licence. Do not overload your vehicle, be it with goods or passengers.

When driving, put on a seatbelt and see to it that everyone in the vehicle is wearing theirs.

Do not drink and drive.

Avoid the use of mobile phones while driving

Take breaks every two hours or 200km, when necessary.

Avoid driving at night.

Inform family and friends once you have reached your destination.
