NGO pampers conservancy

The N#a-Jaqna Conservancy and Community Forestry in the Tsumkwe constituency this week received equipment valued at N$ 45 000 from The Great Gathering of Humanity Inc., a non-profit organisation from the United States of America. The donation which is aimed at boosting the business activities at the conservancy includes cannon cameras, tripod stands, camera accessories, printers, external hard drives, office stationery, among others.

According to The Great Gathering of Humanity Inc’s representat ive in Namibia, Showmore Janga, the organization decided to donate to the conservancy after the non-profit organisation’s director Miriam Delicado had an engagement with the marginalised community, last year. “It was at that engagement the director realised that the community was at times taken advantage of by people that pretended to market and solicit donations for the conservancy but end up keeping the donation for themselves,” said Janga. He added that this is what prompted the organisation to initiate this project.

“The aim is to ensure that the conservancy has the equipment they need in order to market themselves,” he continued. Janga further noted that their organisation also aims to set up a wifi at the conservancy at the value of about N$15 000 annually. They also intend to create a website for the conservancy.

“We are doing all these to make sure that we create an enabling environment and platform for this conservancy to thrive in selling their culture and activities directly to the world, withou third parties.

The objective of the N#jaqna Conservancy and Community Forestry is to protect, preserve and demonstrate the culture and lifestyle of the San people. Their activities include game hunting tours, demonstration on the use of various bush food and medicine, animal tracking, snaring and other hunting methods, making crafts, singing and dancing, and showcasing traditional attires.

The revenue from the conservancy is used for community development.
