Namibia records 501 new cases as 601 recover

Minister of Health and Social Services Dr Kalumbi Shangula yesterday announced that Namibia had recorded 501 new Covid-19 cases and four deaths related to the pandemic.

The confirmed cases have a gender distributi­on of 235 males and 266 females, with the youngest person being four-yearsold and the oldest is 91 years old.

Of the four deaths recorded, two are from the Windhoek district, while the other two are from Walvis Bay and Katima Mulilo.

Shangula said out of the 501 total cases announced on Tuesday, the Khomas region recorded the highest number at 153, followed by //Kharas with 76 and Oshikoto 55.

The Omusati region recorded 42 new cases, followed by Kunene and Erongo with 39 cases each, while the Otjozondju­pa region recorded 31 cases, followed by Ohangwena with 28 cases; Oshana 14; Zambezi 11; Hardap ten; Omaheke two and Kavango East one.

The minister said Windhoek’s cases are sporadical­ly located from all suburbs and the ministry continues to receive confirmed cases of learners, teachers and students who are on their holidays.

He said among the confirmed cases, 32 are healthcare workers consisting of 12 from the Windhoek district, three from Tsandi and Luderitz, while Opuwo, Onandjokwe, Outapi, Engela and Eenahana two healthcare worker each and one from Keetmashop, Walvis Bay, Okahao and Katima Mulilo.

“The Luderitz district cases include 17 employees from Namdeb based in Orandjemun­d. Confirmed cases also include nine inmates, of which six are from Opuwo police holding cells and one from Okatope police holding cells,” said Shangula.

The minister also announced 610 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 21 777.

On Tuesday, Namibia had 3 885 active cases, with 268 hospitalis­ed confirmed cases, of which 36 are in intensive care units.

The Khomas region represents 44% of all hospitalis­ed confirmed cases, said Shangula.
