Regional council comes to aid of starving family
KATIMA MULILO – The Zambezi Regional Council has pooled resources to assist a family of 54 in the Sihemba area, located in Katima Mulilo Rural constituency, by donating food items, cutlery and blankets.
This follows after the publication of a story in the local media, highlighting the plight of the hapless family. Katima Rural councillor Warden Simushi stated he was unaware of the family and their struggle.
“If one does not go through our office, it is difficult for us to know about who is in need of assistance at times but we are glad that we are now aware of your situation,” he said before handing over food items to the family.
“I can see that you have cultivated maize, which is good. We will ensure that you also receive seeds, as the regional council provides that to each constituency every year,” he said.
Officials from the ministry of home affairs were also mandated to take down details of some of the children in the family who are without national documents.
One of the younger children Mary Kunyanda said she has in the past tried to help her siblings to acquire national documents, but the effort proved too difficult for her.
“I had to drop out of school in grade 8, as I had problems with documentation and the necessary support to finish school. We struggled to ensure that one of my siblings went up to grade 12 but could unfortunately not continue due to lack of support,” she said.
“There are 13 children who need to go back to school this year, which can only be possible once they obtain their documents and any support.”
