182 learners contract coronaviru­s

Nearly 200 pupils have tested positive for Covid-19, with the Oshikoto region reporting 101 cases involving learners yesterday. Health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula yesterday announced 182 learners have been infected with coronaviru­s. Shangula said Omuthiya district in the Oshikoto region reported the highest numbers of Covid-19 cases compared to other districts. He said among the confirmedc­ases are 182 learners of which 101 learners are from Ekulo Senior Secondary School in Omuthiya district.

Shangula said the health ministry is currently working in close collaborat­ion with the education ministry and stakeholde­rs to urgently address the increase in cases among learners. “We urge all school authoritie­s, teachers, learners and parents to assist in this fight against further spread of Covid-19 infection in schools. Learners are strongly encouraged to strictly adhere to the existing Covid-19 infection prevention and control measures,” Shangula said. He further announced that two healthcare workers also tested positive to coronaviru­s infection. On a sad note, he also announced a Covid-19 related death. According to Shangula, the deceased is a 46-year-old male from Oshakati district who died on 12 February. Yesterday, the country recorded 273 new cases, one death and 120 new recoveries. The total number of active cases currently stands at 1 568, 118 are hospitalis­ed, 12 are in intensive care units.
