NFA backing Motsepe for CAF presidency
THE Namibia Football Association (NFA) has endorsed the candidature of South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe for the post of president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). CAF elections will be held next month in Rabata, Morocco and Motsepe is up against Augustin Senghor of Senegal, Jacques Anouma of Cote d’Ivoire and Ahmad Ould Yahya from Mauritania. The CAF president automatically becomes a vice president of the world football governing authority, Fifa.
Incumbent CAF president Ahmad Ahmad of Madagascar is not in the running, as he is still fighting to clear his name after Fifa suspended him over allegations of financial irregularities in the manner in which he ran African soccer.
The Council of Southern African Football Associations, as a bloc, has backed Motsepe and now individual FAs are also coming out openly with their endorsements.
NFA secretary-general Franco Cosmos said: “We are definitely voting for Motsepe in the forthcoming CAF elections because he is from the Southern African Development Community and he will do well for our football if he wins. We are also doing this because all member states of the Council of Southern African Football Associations have made a pact to back a candidate from the region, so Motsepe is the right candidate for us.”
The NFA boss added that Motsepe – who has made South African Premiership side Mamelodi Sundowns into a force to be reckoned with – has contributed immensely to COSAFA and the Southern African region’s football fraternity.
