NKURENKURU – It was all joy and celebration as topperforming matric teachers in the Kavango West region received recognition from the region’s education directorate for their outstanding performances last year.

Leevi Hakusembe Secondary School teacher Paulus Harald was one of the teachers awarded during a ceremony held on Friday.

Harald, a Mathematics teacher at the public school, scored a 100% pass rate in the subject during last year’s grade 12 Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Higher Level examination.

“I am very happy to get this award because, I can tell you, I have been working hard for the past two years,” expressed the proud Harald, who is a first-time recipient of the award.

“Those learners, when I got them, they did not have the courage to study Mathematics, but I had to work hard and force them. We used to have extra classes in the afternoon, Fridays and Saturdays, so that’s how I achieved this award because I was really working very, very hard.”

Another teacher who was recognised on the day was Brian Chimbwe, a Physical Science teacher at a private school, ELCIN Nkurenkuru High School.

He scooped two awards for scoring a 100% pass rate in the subject in the grade 11 ordinary level examinations, as well as in the grade 12 high level examination.

Chimbwe was equally happy and attributed his success story in the journey to being an award recipient to the school and his former learners.

“I feel very happy because the school gave me an opportunity as well as the trust and confidence they had in me to handle the Namibian child and produce these results. I’m very grateful to the school and also to the learners because […] we shared the effort,” Chimbwe said.

When asked if he will continue to produce outstanding results, he said: “The school being stable and the support coming forth, it is very possible to maintain the same percentage scores”.

A teacher from Sharukwe Combined School, also a public school, Cellefasius Mwira, was a recipient of two awards.

Mwira said all it took him was dedication, getting close to his learners and seeking support from those with experience in the subjects he was awarded in.

He was awarded for being the top-performing teacher in Biology, grade 11 ordinary level and for second best teacher in Chemistry.

“I’m going to work very hard because I’m being honoured,” he said.
