Simon Jr guns for Mayweather …as father moots retirement fight

-

Namibian boxing prospect Harry Simon Jnr says he is ready to step into the ring against America’s Justin Mayweather, who comes to Zimbabwe to participate in the World Classic Boxing tournament slated for August.

Mayweather, son of the iconic Floyd Mayweather Snr and brother of five-division champion Floyd Mayweather Jnr, will headline what is expected to be the biggest fight in southern Africa. The tournament, marking the launch of a monthly series, is being promoted by US stable Lion Heart Productions, whose CEO Edward Mendy manages Justin Mayweather.

Simon Jnr, son of Namibia’s legendary Harry Simon Snr who remains unbeaten since 1994, wants a shot at Justin Mayweather. Simon Snr was recently in Harare for the unveiling of the World Classic Boxing tournament, where he was negotiating with Mendy to make the fight happen.

Simon Snr told The Southern Times Sport, “I have asked my son if he wishes to fight (Justin) Mayweather in Harare, and he said he can’t wait. I asked him several questions, to which his answers were all yes. So, I am already in talks with Mendy about that possible match-up, and it seems we are heading for it.

“This is a great opportunity for the growth of boxing in the region. I implore promoters in the region to join hands and have their pugilists sweat it out here. I have come to negotiate the fight, but also to give the tournament my approval as one of the region’s legends.”

The 23-year-old Simon Jnr is undefeated in 13 bouts since turning pro, and he has a long road ahead to match his father’s 34-0 record.

Simon Snr said he could possibly step into the ring for the last time in Harare this August in what will be an exhibition match for the 48-year-old Namibian legend.

“My career has been characterised by highs and lows, but I am proud of my record. I am probably the only boxer who has gone for 26 years without defeat. I want one more fight this year, possibly an exhibition in Harare in this upcoming world-class tournament. I will also retire this year to concentrate on coaching,” he added.
