Monty Ndjavera Winter Cup this weekend

-

The Mbiripipo Monty Ndjavera football and netball winter tournament is set to take place at the John ya Otto field, Khomasdal stadium as well as the Ella du Plessis sports grounds in Windhoek. Matches start tomorrow, and run until Sunday.

One of the tournament organisers, Tjiurimo Hange, said this will be the first edition, but they hope to make it an annual event should this one prove successful.

He explained that due to Covid-19 measures and protocols, three sports fields have been identified for hosting all games, which will allow for more people to attend at separate venues while also avoiding overcrowding.

“The tournament has thus far attracted more than 35 football and netball teams from as far as Opuwo, Gam, Omatjete, Windhoek and some from the vast Omaheke region,” said an excited Hange.

The tournament received a sponsorship boost of N$100 000 from local business personalities Monty and Nambeiue Ndjavera.

From that amount, N$40 000 has been allocated for the administration of the event, while the remaining N$60 000 will be dispersed among the winning teams in both the netball and football categories.

The netball champions will walk away with N$10 000 and a trophy, while the runners-up will pocket N$5 000, and the third and fourth-placed teams will take home N$2 500 each.

The football category winners will receive N$20 000 and a trophy, the runners-up will receive N$10 000, and the third and fourth-placed teams will each walk away with N$5 000. Individual prizes will also be given to the top-performing players.
