Contact sports resume

After several months of inactivity due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in Namibia, contact sports and other activities such as social events are now allowed to resume.

Reacting to the news yesterday, Namibia Rugby Union president Corry Mensah said it is good that contact sports has been given the green light to return, but warned everyone involved to be cautious and follow the right safety procedures.

Asked about the union’s plans for the rest of the year, he said the local league will definitely return very soon.

“We are sending out communication to all the affiliated clubs to start with training while we are busy working on the schedule and the way forward, and a final decision will be made by the end of this week,” Mensah added.

Meanwhile, Netball Namibia vice president Rebecca Goagoses said they are busy restructuring the MTC Namibia Netball Premier League schedules.

“We are looking at ways to stage our games, because the new regulations won’t last forever. There could be changes to it when the current regulations lapse (on 14 September 2021). So, at this point, we are busy working on ways that we can properly stage our games without obstructions,” she explained.

Also adding his views on contact sports returning is trainer and owner of AC Boxing Promotions Imms Moses, who acknowledged that it is good news. However, he felt it is too early to say if the bonanza they planned to host on 31 July 2021 will be staged, because there still is uncertainty around the new regulations.

“We have not decided on whether the bonanza will be staged because we are not sure if the current regulations will be changed again after they come to an end. We are closely monitoring it,” he said.
