Unam donates respirators to health ministry
The University of Namibia (Unam) recently donated four respirator machines, valued at N$705 000, to the Ministry of Health and Social Services.
The donation is the outcome of the university’s collaboration with Radboud University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, which began in 1994 as a result of a shared interest in astrophysics.
According to a media statement issued on Monday, health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula noted that Unam continues to be a vital partner in the national response against Covid-19.
“We are glad that Unam and its partners have once again put their best foot forward by assisting the Covid-19 national response with this critical contribution of respirator machines,” he said, adding that he looks forward to Unam being a vital partner in the fight against the pandemic.
This, he claims, is supported by the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory (Covid-19 testing lab) developed by Unam and its partners, which enables genome sequencing, which allows researchers to detect the types of Covid-19 variants that are circulating throughout the country, according to the statement.
Esther Muinjangue, deputy minister of health, was quoted as saying the term “thank you” is insufficient to communicate the ministry’s appreciation.
“We are grateful and pleased to be connected with the University of Namibia as a ministry – and for their continuous support, we are grateful,” she added.
