Massive shot in the arm for women’s cricket
As part of its new N$150 000 sponsorship agreement with Cricket Namibia (CN), the Capricorn Group is now the headline sponsor of women’s cricket in the country, including the girls’ cricket festivals and schools development leagues.
The sponsorship handover was held on Sunday at the Wanderers sports field, where CN hosted a
Capricorn Eagles Franchise T20 competition.
The national women’s cricket team will now officially be known as the Capricorn Eagles.
During the ceremony, Capricorn Group executive Marlize Horn thanked CN chief executive Johan Muller for the opportunity to collaborate.
She handed over a cricket bat to symbolise the sponsorship, and indicated that they are proud to partner with CN, whose leadership has demonstrated passion and commitment towards cricket development over the years.
One of the goals is to create more opportunities for women’s cricketers in Namibia, and to generally increase female participation.
“We are very proud of the accomplishments of the Capricorn Eagles, and look forward to seeing them soaring even higher. Through our commitment of N$150 000 to women and girls’ cricket in Namibia for this year, we hope to grow enthusiasm for the sport. But as connectors of positive change, we look forward to creating more opportunities for them,” Horn said.
In June this year, the Capricorn Group and its subsidiaries Capricorn Asset Management and Capricorn Private Wealth sent off the women’s team to the Kwibuka Tournament that
took place in Kigali, Rwanda. The Capricorn Eagles had outstanding performances, making the nation proud with a 5/5 win.
On his part, Muller said it is an absolute privilege to have the Capricorn Group as a partner.
“We are grateful for their support and involvement in our women’s team and girls’ schools programme. The upliftment of the women’s game is a key strategic focus for CN. Therefore, it is great to partner with a company that shares the same vision. The Capricorn Eagles train very hard, and have already proven their merit. We believe that their effort will continue to show on the field.”
