Rugby fraternity mourns McNab

- ■ Maurice Kambukwe

The Namibia rugby fraternity is grieving the passing away of FNB Rehoboth Rugby Club player Cameron ‘Hotdog’ McNab, who died in a car accident on Saturday.

The club’s chairman confirmed the death of their player but could, however, not delve deeper into details about the accident, as he too was still trying to get more information on what transpired.

The Namibian Police have since reported that the accident happened at around 02h50 along Hosea Kutako Drive in Windhoek.

It is alleged that two vehicles collided head-on, when the deceased made a Uturn. It further said McNab succumbed to his injuries while on his way to the hospital. The other driver, his wife and daughter only sustained slight injuries. One occupant who was in the deceased’s vehicle, sustained a broken arm and is admitted at Katutura Intermediate Hospital. Police investigations continue.

McNab started his rugby career at the Dr. Lemmer High School in Rehoboth, and also played for Unam. He represented Namibia in the U/18 Craven Week, at U/20 national level and national sevens rugby.

He would have turned 29 this Thursday.

He also dabbled a bit in boxing. Western Suburbs coach Lorenzo Kloppers told New Era Sport McNab was a strong player with a good personality, describing his death as a big loss to rugby in Namibia.

“He joined our club (Suburbs) at the beginning of the year, but due to travelling from Rehoboth to Windhoek, he asked to return to his club (Rehoboth). He is a strong player with a great personality, and I was so sad to hear about his passing,” said Kloppers.

“It is a huge loss to the rugby fraternity, we will miss him. One thing that disappointed me was that he was always at national trials for selection into the senior team, but was always snubbed, which was heartbreaking to someone who is good,” he said.

The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) sent heartfelt condolences to McNab family, friends, FNB Rehoboth Rugby Club and the entire rugby family McNab had built over the years.

“Rest in eternal peace,” said the NRU. Unam Rugby Club also posted on social media, saying rugby would never be the same again without him.

“We as FNB Unam Rugby brothers of Cameron McNab would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire rugby fraternity in Namibia. Rugby will never be the same again, we are going to miss you brother,” read the post.

Trustco United said: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Rehoboth Rugby Club, the family and friends of Cameron ‘Hotdog’ McNab. We’ve lost a wonderful rugby player. May your soul rest in eternal peace.”
