Leather for any weather

- Wilhelmina Iimene

Many Namibians are putting their talent to good use in order to kick unemployment to the curb. Others use their gifts from God to simply kill time, and for some, it has become hobbies.

Cynthia Pejarukaune Kangootui is one of many who have turned what they love into successful businesses.

She founded PejaaK Leather House in December 2019 with the slogan ‘Let’s Build Leather Memories Together’. It is a proudly Namibian company which tailormakes leather products such as bags, office accessories, belts, wallets, watch straps and pouches.

The mother of four said going after her dreams unapologetically is her greatest achievement to date.

“Juggling a corporate career, studies and motherhood while establishing PejaaK Leather House is my pride and achievement thus far,” she told VIBEZ!

Kangootui loves to play around with leather. She makes products according to clients’ specifications, and on request, she also engraves messages or names onto the products to make them unique and special.

These products are made with the finest, genuine leather, using old-school handcrafting methods. Although she uses leather from local tannery Nakara, she imports other colour varieties which are not found locally.

This God-loving and -fearing woman seeks to fulfil His purpose for her life in whatever she does.

Kangootui further stated that her biggest motivation in her journey has been and will always be God, and the hunger to do great things with her life which translates into serving others.

On how to stay afloat in an already established industry, she said: “Put God first, love yourself and believe in yourself, as selfconfidence will take you places. Attach what you do to the things you love and always be fearless in the pursuit of your dreams”.

She further advised that if one wants to succeed in a certain area, it is advisable they find someone in their field of study or business to learn from in order to execute their ideas with ease.

To emerging artisans, Kangootui urged that they establish a unique offering and never compromise on quality.

“Find your own tribe of customers and make sure that you serve the world with your gifts, and always be your authentic self,” she said.

Leather artisan Kangootui is currently operating her business as a sole proprietorship, and is in the process of putting structures in place to be able to meet the growing demand for her products, and to be able to distribute them across the country.

PejaaK Leather House is training learner artisans to join the team, and is working on a unique range of products which will soon be available countrywide.
