OTJIWARONGO - More than 30 officials from the Kunene, Erongo and Otjozondjupa regional councils gathered at Otjiwarongo on Monday to discuss the newly-launched government communications strategy.

Information minister Peya Mushelenga officiated at the event, saying the 22-page document was launched in October 2022 in the capital, and will run from 2022 to 2027.

He stated that there is a need for the document to be understood by all public servants and political leaders on when to say what to whom, and why that message needs to reach the public.

His ministry has thus found it fit to formulate this detailed and concise document on government communications so that it serves as a blueprint that would direct the coordination and dissemination of truthful information to the public.

“The objective here is to deliver a world-class public service communications system, which supports government’s priorities in the efforts of efficient and effective service delivery to the masses,” said Mushelenga.

SincetheMICTisresponsible for media policy formulation, media coordination, regulation and implementation of the Act of Parliament on the Right of Access to Information, the same ministry will also continue to lead information dissemination and advocacy on government’s programmes, policies and projects.

Mushelenga thus urged all responsible offices tasked with information dissemination to be always truthful, accurate, media-friendly and timely in disseminating information.

MICT executive director Audrin Mathe, who presented the document to the participants, said it has the ultimate goal of ensuring that government offices, ministries and agencies become organised in a cluster format that would mirror Cabinet’s arrangements.

Otjozondjupa governor James Uerikua was also present, and expressed excitement in seeing government starting to implement this communications strategy that would allow a prioritisation of access to information, more than it is now, for economic gains.

Several regional and local authority councillors and senior officials attended the one-day information- sharing session.
