Met office predicts rain showers

The meteorological office has predicted rain this coming weekend for most of the northern and central parts of Namibia.

Chief forecaster Odillo Kgobetsi yesterday also predicted moderate to heavy storms over the southern parts of Namibia within the next two days.

Thereafter, it is expected that the sky will clear over the west and south of the country.

“We expect a few showers and thundershowers over the northern and central parts of Namibia this week. We are looking forward to a good weekend with showers,” he said.

Toward the end of the week, Kgobetsi said moisture is expected to start drifting back again into the northern, central, and eastern parts of Namibia with thundershowers.

Further, more rainfall is projected into the weekend over the northern and southern parts of Namibia.

Thereafter, high temperatures will start rising again towards the end of the next week.

“We should expect warmer temperatures towards the end of the weekend. We expect warm to hot temperatures in the coastal regions. Few showers are most likely over the coastal regions over the next two days. Thereafter, we should expect fog patches to set in and temperatures to start dropping over the coastal regions,” he forecasted.

Regionally, weather experts have forecast a wet 2022/23 rainfall season for the SADC region.

The SADC weather forecast indicates a bulk of Namibia, Central Mozambique, southern Malawi, the northern half of Zimbabwe, most of Zambia, southern DRC, the south-eastern half of Angola, the western half of Botswana, most of the central and western parts of South Africa, and western parts of Lesotho are likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall through the 2022/23 farming season.

The positive climate outlook is attributed to an expected La Nina episode during the coming season. La Nina conditions are triggered by the cooling of temperature in the Pacific Ocean and are usually associated with heavy rains and flooding in southern Africa
