Ben Brown has long been a friend of Adventure Magazine and in many ways he has led the growth of action cameras in New Zealand. He was one of the first to embrace the rugged easy to use aspect of this type of camera into action sports. In the last issue he did a detailed run down on how to get the most out of your camera and outlined how he took specific shots–we have posted this atwww. adventure magazine. co.nz The next few pages are a continuance of that detailed look on how certain images have been taken and a few insider tricks to make on how to make it happen. Hamurana Springs on the shores of Lake Rotorua in New Zealand’s North Island has some of the clearest water I have seen anywhere in the world. I was keen on experimenting with some underwater shots while incorporating my kayak as well. I normally paddle whitewater so doing something on flat water was definitely a little different. I balanced on the nose of my kayak and drifted over the top of my GoPro giving the impression of my boat vertically penetrating the surface of the water. How the shot was captured: I mounted a GoPro on a 5kg barbell weight and swam it to the bottom of the river and positioned it. I set the camera on timelapse mode shooting an image every 0.5 secs. It took a lot of trial and error to get the my kayak in the correct position and to have the camera on the right angle but it was totally worth it!
