Don’t be too quick to scold your child for bit­ing their fin­ger­nails or suck­ing their thumb – a New Zealand study sug­gests both habits can en­hance over­all health in later years. While re­searchers have not un­cov­ered ex­actly how this works, the sus­pected link is that young thumb suck­ers and nail biters in­crease their ex­po­sure to mi­crobes at an early age, which boosts their im­mune sys­tem.
