Eating burnt toast could increase your risk of cancer, according to new research. When starchy foods are cooked at high temperatur­es, a chemical compound called acrylamide is formed and studies on mice have shown that high levels of it can cause neurologic­al damage and cancer. While studies on humans are inconclusi­ve, the advice when cooking toast is to go for gold, not black. The warning also applies to other overcooked starchy foods such as potatoes.
