The last time I cried laughing was… My dad’s Jack Russell, Scruff, was recently given a squeaky crocodile toy. Once Scruff figured out that it squeaked when he bit it, he tried to kill it in numerous ways. But the damn thing just wouldn’t die. He pounced on it, he shook it to death, but every time he thought it was dead it would squeak again and spark a fresh frenzy of fury.

The item I would save from a fire is… My daughter’s artwork. It bedecks our entire house, it is colourful and a bit mad. I love it dearly, it makes our house our home.

The living person I most admire is… At the moment it’s Jacinda Ardern. She’s walking the talk. While the rest of the world has gone stark raving mad, her rhetoric is of kindness, empathy and hope. I wish her the very best. The most memorable overseas adventure

I’ve had is… When I was 17, I got a scholarship and lived with a Thai family in a remote Thai village for a year. There was one other English speaker in the village but he didn’t live at my house. It was a remarkable and wonderful experience. I think it was my way of figuring out who I was in the world – I did that instead of having a teenage rebellion.

When I’m working hard I unwind by… Gin

and soda. If I could bring someone famous and/or accomplished back from the dead, it would

be… Shakespeare. This mystery about who he really was needs to be resolved once and for all. Plus he’s, you know, a genius. And we need more writers who can create complex female characters.

My most prized possession is… My daughter. Perhaps she wouldn’t like to be thought of as my possession. But she is, she’s mine! The things I need for a perfect summer’s

night are… Fireflies, family, gin, perfect limes, an open fire, a guitar and possibly a spot of folk singing.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be… Prime Minister. I was six, outrageously confident, and I thought I could do a better job than Rob Muldoon.
