Becomes the rose

-

Roses, known as the Queen of Flowers, can be used to change your garden into a dreamscape with their majestic beauty, sweet fragrances and glorious colours or in pots as gorgeous feature plants.

It seems strange to be talking about roses at this time of year when they are at their least spectacular; however this is the time when the first of the new season’s roses become available. Planting now gives the roots a chance to settle and then burst into growth in the spring, giving the plant its best start.

There are many different shapes, sizes and colours available ranging from the traditional Hybrid Teas, with their beautiful refined blooms, Floribundas and English Roses, through to climbers and ramblers.

Hybrid Tea roses are wonderful for picking as they generally have just one single bloom on a stem. Many of them are fragrant and the colour range is stunning. Plant these individually in the garden or in a small group to create spectacular accents.

Floribunda roses have a cluster of flowers and are carefree and very colourful, as are the lovely English roses which are more of an oldfashioned look often with a rich fragrance.

Climbers and ramblers are ideal for covering ugly fence lines, old tanks, walls or framing entranceways or pergolas. They can certainly create a feeling of calm and romance in the garden.

The thing I like best about roses is that they are a plant that can be relied upon to give you a stunning floral display from a very early age. If you plant new season roses now you will be rewarded with flowers this summer. They are ideal to plant if you have a special event in the summer such as a wedding, as you can be sure that you will have blooms. They are quick to establish and contrary to belief are easy to grow.

Remember when planting your roses, firstly only select top quality, well shaped and disease free plants such as what we stock here at Decor.

Ensure that you dig in plenty of “Magic” compost or garden mix and sheep pellets at the time of planting and add in some Ican Slow Food.

When you purchase your roses from us, keep in mind that they will need to be properly pruned in late July.

This is just a matter of taking out any weak or excess growth (I will be doing a pruning demonstration tomorrow, July 5, at 1.30pm here at Decor Gardenworld).

Throughout the growing season you can feed them with Tui rose fertiliser and keep to a simple spray programme to prevent pests and diseases (this can be found on our website). If your soil is nice and healthy and they are well fed and watered, you won’t have too much trouble.

This year we have several new release roses, most of which will be available in spring along with a selection of good doers for Tauranga, which are available right now.

See our website for our full 2020 Rose Collection list and rose-care tips and don’t forget to join in our free Rose Care Demo tomorrow (Sunday) at 1.30pm.
