Whether you’re interested to know what’s happening locally or nationally, here are a few things you need to know about this upcoming week.

Labour Day

Today is Labour Day. The day was first celebrated in New Zealand on October 28, 1890, when several thousand trade union members and supporters attended parades in the main centres.

Government employees were also given the day off to attend parades and many businesses closed for at least part of the day.

Tauranga kerbside collection changes

Rubbish and recycling will not be collected today in Tauranga due to the Labour Day public holiday. Instead, all kerbside collection­s, including garden waste, will be collected one day later than usual this week, with Monday’s collection­s moving to Tuesday and so on.

Those who use a private waste collection service should check in with their service provider about public holiday service changes, Tauranga City Council said.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council strategy and policy committee meeting

There will be a Bay of Plenty Regional Council strategy and policy committee meeting on Wednesday, starting at 9.30am. Due to Covid-19 alert level 2 restrictio­ns, the meeting will be held via Zoom and livestream­ed and recorded.

The public section of this meeting will be recorded and uploaded to the council’s website.

Stats NZ releases

Stats NZ will this week be publishing figures on Effects of Covid-19 on Trade: At October 20 (provisiona­l), Employment indication­s: September 2021, and Household living-costs indexes: September 2021 quarter among others. Employment indicators: Weekly as of October 25 has been postponed until November 4.

Parliament

Parliament is meeting tomorrow from 2pm, as well as Wednesday and on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Education and Workforce Committee will meet from 9am to 1pm on Wednesday.
