New interest in old boats Wineworks Yacht Race on again
THE THIRTEENTH WINEWORKS Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Yacht Race is scheduled for November 6 2015.
This event combines a yacht race across the Cook Strait with the release in Wellington of the new vintage of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine. Wineworks is supporting the event for the seventh year running.
Starting at the entrance to the Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds, skippers and crews compete to be the first to deliver their wine across the finish line in Wellington Harbour. Last year, 28 yachts battled 45kph winds and four-metre seas to safely transport their bottles of Sauvignon Blanc from 30 Marlborough wineries. Organisers expect an even larger fleet and more dedicated wineries for this year’s race. WITH MORE THAN 1,000,000 views, the waitematawoodys.com website is proving a hit with Kiwi boaters.
The site is dedicated to the study and appreciation of classic and traditional wooden boats. It was founded upon a desire to tell the stories and archive the history of our boats, the craftsmen who built them and characters that crewed on them. Visiting the website is like meeting a bunch of people at a boat club bar – it’s about gathering stories, photos, history and reminiscences.
To share with us your wooden boating photos and tales, email them to waitematawoodys@gmail.com
The site encourages the exchange of knowledge about the care and restoration of old boats and facilitates gatherings of classic wooden boats.
