TAURANGA YACHT AND POWERBOAT CLUB

-

Now in its 100th year, the TY&PBC has a rich history of making things happen. Founded in 1920 with around 100 members, four years later the club applied to the Harbour Board to build a clubhouse next to a railway bridge at Matapihi. It was built in 1933.

Then the TY&PBC hosted centreboard fleets of P Class, Zs, Idle Alongs, keelers and motor launches.

The club continued to grow throughout the 40s and 50s and a second storey was added to the clubhouse.

When the Tauranga Harbour Board started reclamation work in the early 1970s, the TY&PBC moved to its current location in Sulphur Point. Once again, an army of club volunteers built the new premises which was opened in 1983. Further sheds have since been added to accommodate three more water-orientated clubs and dinghy storage.

TY&PBC currently provides regular racing for P Class, Optimist, Starling, Laser, Zephyr, multihulls, trailer yachts and keeler fleets and has produced National Champions in all of these classes.
