Dog Dayz at Dannevirke’s showgrounds this month

- By DAVE MURDOCH

With entries now closed organisers are confident the very successful Ruahine Kennel Association Dog Shows of 2017 will again be a success — if the weather behaves.

Moved to April from October in 2017 after being smashed by the weather for too many years, the 2017 show was a great success with more than 400 dogs being shown in two shows Saturday and Sunday.

The same format is set for April 21-22 at the Dannevirke A&P Show Grounds, with competitions starting at 9am each day. Entry is free although parents are asked to control younger children near dogs. “If there is an incident with a dog and child, it is not the child that is put down,” Ruahine Kennel Association spokesman Tim Delaney says.

There will be a large number of champion dogs from just about every breed and the four rings will be in constant action as the two New Zealand and two Australian judges make their decisions.

Locals can strut their stuff in the ring on Sunday at noon during the Kidz and Kanines event when any kind of dog can be assessed, its leader critiqued and a ribbon presented.

Dog Dayz at the A&P Showgrounds has a festive appearance with most dog breeders using gazebos, caravans and cages for overnight accommodation.

There are stalls selling every kind of food and equipment for dogs.
