Shooters busy on opening weekend

- By DAVE MURDOCH

The evidence is anecdotal but it appears duck shooters had a successful opening weekend in the northern Tararua.

While the conditions were not ideal on Saturday, with no cloud cover or wind, Sunday was overcast in the morning and the west of Dannevirke, which was quiet on Saturday, was busy on Sunday morning.

Two young hunters had a 30-duck haul over the weekend north of Dannevirke while an Australian from Victoria was thrilled to shoot his quota along the Manawatu River.

Others in other spots had a lean time of it but there are plenty of ducks reported in the district and future shooting could be rewarding.

Certainly indications from retailers suggest there were a lot of hunters out there and their clients had had reasonable success.

One pronounced the season so far as good.

Dannevirke Hunting and Fishing sold over 200 licences, a lot more than last year, possibly due to giving away a knife with each licence, but sales of guns and gear were up in all venues selling equipment.

Dave’s Sport n Outdoors had a special trade-in deal to purchase Eternal Impactor shotguns and were sold out in two days.

High-end guns like the Miroka MK70 also sold well.

Dannevirke Hunting and Fishing were still selling guns on Saturday morning and owner Richard France expects the trade to continue.

Dannevirke’s Lower Domain sanctuary was not crowded on Tuesday, and the ducks did not appear spooked by their weekend experience.
