Good Herefords for sale

- By STEVE CARLE´

Koanui Polled Herefords are delighted with the offering they have for sale this year.

They are pleased with the strength of the bulls, consistency from top to bottom and balanced performance.

“There is a very strong data set to go with them which is encouraging. It’s the genetics that make up the pedigree of the animals from good performing blood lines across all traits. There’s a balanced set of performance data,” says Chris Chesterman who operates the stud along with his wife, Jennifer, and father Fred.

From Havelock North, the Chestermans (the fourth generation) have been breeding Hereford cattle about 45 years. With 750 breeding cows, it’s one of the largest recorded herds of all breeds in New Zealand.

The showpiece of the year is their annual bull sale of 2-year-old bulls on June 14. It’s one of the biggest Hereford sales in New Zealand and something they specialise in.

“With the number of breeding cows it gives us tremendous depth of selection,” says Chris. “Our sales are mainly transfers to other pure-bred breeders and commercial breeders who are repeat buyers.

“We bought the top-priced bull at the national bull sale last year — that’s not a one-off at all. We had the third highest priced bull in New Zealand at our own sale.” With 60 bulls on offer, buyers from all around New Zealand are given a tremendous selection.
