Community Board meets at town cafe

- By DAVE MURDOCH

At its June meeting Dannevirke Community Board member Kim Spooner-Taylor expressed concern at the low visibility of the Board in the community.

The board then resolved to hold a public meeting at the Red Skye Cafe´ this month.

The response was such that Kim said she was “tickled pink”.

A good number of long-term and new residents took the opportunity to share a coffee and discuss issues concerning them, including the speed of traffic by the Gateway Motel and funeral goers clogging parking outside Steve’s Tuck Shop.

Both of these issues had come up at previous community board meetings in the traffic safety portfolio chaired by board member Pat Walshe.

As a result of a request from the board, NZTA has agreed to place a 50km/hour repeater sign for traffic travelling between Dannevirke Honda and the bridge.

Action on the parking issue is still pending.

In recent weeks the Community Board has helped to fund and re-erect the Viking by the Information Centre, and has also made a number of grants to community groups.

Funding has gone to:

■ Dannevirke Host Lions received $300 for hiring the Town Hall for its book sale;

■ Tararua Community Youth Services received $1859 for iPhones and iPads;

■ Alzheimers Society Manawatu¯ received $900 for hiring the band rooms;

■ Dannevirke Combined Indoor Bowling Club received $127 to pay for venue hire for its IDEA tournament.

Local issues have also been pursued.

These included the needed upgrade and completion of the Adelaide Road Walk/Cycleway.

A committee chaired by Chris Southgate combining Rotary and Lions Clubs is working with the community board and Tararua District Council to consider completing the Cadman Road option or Cole Street.

Interest and input through board member Terry Hynes is also being taken in the future of the Carnegie building and associated Tararua Community Youth Services.

The community board was also pleased to hear Dannevirke Promotions and Development Society had offered to be the umbrella organisation for raising funds for the skate park development.

Looking into the future the community board is still seeking feedback on the feasibility of running the Spring Festival planned for October to the middle of November.

Please contact Chairman Ross MacDonald on 06 374 7996 if you would like to participate.

Nominations are now open for the Wackrow Memorial Youth Award and they close on August 3. The Award function will be held on August 28.

■ If you have issues you would like to raise with the Dannevirke Community Board contact Chairman Ross MacDonald and come to its public forum the next time it meets on Monday July 2 at 1pm in the Council Chambers.
