Fun and games at Ruahine

- By DAVE MURDOCH

Last month it was the Pumpkin Festival.

This month it is Wacky Hair Day. Ruahine and Districts School mixes fun with education and good causes.

Nothing quite gets parents and their children together as a combined project, whether it is helping with homework, attending a lamb and calf day, holding a pumpkin festival or running a wacky hair day.

Ruahine School does them all.

Friday June 1, it was Wacky Hair Day. Meeting in the hall the school held its fashion parade giving each class a chance to walk in front of other students, staff and parents.

It was a celebration of creativity and colour, heaps of commercial mohawks and other wigs competing with the homegrown variety.

There were nests with bird’s eggs and even birds, a golf ball on a green, several coke bottles and cups, flowers, layered rainbows and many other creations.

The teachers were just as involved with principal Sarah McCord — feeling 30 years younger — in pigtails.

Westpac Bank Manager Fiona Suurenbroek received $181 to go towards the Rescue Helicopter. The helicopter service operates out of 16 bases across New Zealand and completed 7200 missions last year. She said Westpac is in its 35th year of sponsoring the service and raised $1.2 million last year to support bases like Palmerston North .

The school has already run its very popular Stars in Their Eyes talent quest, then calving and lambing starts.
