Cans donated for good

- By MELINDA COWE Principal Eketa¯ huna School

Primary Schools all around the country hope to collect more than 25,000 cans to help the Salvation Army restock local food bank shelves in the lead up to Christmas.

With Watties matching donated cans, that’s a whopping 50,000 cans in total! Eketa¯ huna School made a real difference to those in need in our local community. The campaign involves primary schools and we asked our children to bring along cans to donate. We also went out to the wider community — our team leaders Arcadia Jope, Poppy Manson, Chad Duffy and Jack Redington went into town to put up flyers asking for cans to be dropped into the school office.

How it works: collect canned food in the run up to the event week. Educate children with teaching resource sheets. Create a student led “can artwork”. Donate the cans to the local Salvation Army food bank.

We collected two huge buckets and have donated them to our local food bank.
