Te¯na¯ koutou katoa Greetings to you all

- Ngā mihi nui, Mayor Tracey Collis

As we approach the last week of Long Term Plan consultation, submission numbers are low, despite the significant rates increase.

With the mock rates invoices out, we are envisaging a late surge as residents absorb the impact on their properties.

Submissions close on May 12 on our four key items, Recycling, Community Development, Debt Repayment and Road Financial Reserves. Now is the right time to let us know any ideas, issues or items you feel we need to consider.

We regularly review our rating policies and have been moving towards a userpays approach for some time now.

We have also set a targeted kerbside recycling rate with the introduction of this new service.

The 3 per cent prompt payment discount offered to ratepayers has been removed as the very low interest rates have made this unviable.

We have also introduced a new rates remissions policy on Māori freehold land which is unoccupied. This can qualify for a 100 per cent rates remission if those properties meet defined conditions.

We are also giving early consideration to the way we deliver services, as we see some very successful community hubs being created in other districts. This could include a broad range of services under one roof, such as libraries, museums, art galleries, health services and community organisation offices. We are keen to hear if we should investigate further.

During AgriFood Week, Tararua launched its Land Diversification Project work in Pahiatua. This information will be shared to the website regarding the potential of blueberries, cider apples, feijoas and hazelnuts. We are grateful to the Provincial Growth Fund for the funding received, allowing this level of detailed work to be carried out.
