Pahiatua Golf Club membership healthy with youngsters keen

-

The Pahiatua Golf Course is at Mangatainoka, in view of the iconic Tui Brewery, and with the river running close by. A pristine course with tree-lined fairways over 18 holes, some more challenging than others.

There are five par 3s with different degrees of difficulty. Interestingly, the club was originally formed in 1904 and progressed through several sites until the move to Mangatainoka in 1968. The old farmhouse was converted into the clubhouse and in 1974 the upstairs lounge was built.

The Pahiatua Golf Club has a healthy membership and the club has noticed an increasing amount of younger members joining. They also find that many travellers stop off to play at the course, as it runs so close to, and can be viewed from, the main highway.

Club Day is Saturday, teeing off at 12.15pm, although the women have their Club Day on Tuesdays, teeing off at 10am. Women can also play on Saturday. There is also a haggle on Thursdays, teeing off at 12.15pm. Club members are welcome to play the course whenever they wish.

On Thursday mornings, the club are inviting members of the public who are interested in learning to play golf, to come along and have a hit, guided by the knowledge and experience of existing club members.

If you are interested in attending on a Thursday morning, please phone

Sue Ross on 06 376 3852.

The Pahiatua Golf Club is open to caravans and motorhomes who can spend the night for just $10 per vehicle, per night. This includes the use of the changing rooms and discounted green fees of $15 for those staying over.

Club facilities include large, wellappointed two-storey clubrooms and bar which are open during member playing days (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays).

Golfers can use the second and 11th fairways for practise and for the short game the area adjacent to the carpark.

The practice putting greens surround the club house. Showers are also provided in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

The Pahiatua Golf Club runs tournaments throughout the year, including their own tournaments and those sponsored by businesses and other entities. The women run three tournaments, held over the course of the year, inviting women from other clubs to participate and this is often reciprocated. These tournaments are well attended.

The club also hold weekend tournaments which are often well attended by players from all over the lower North Island. The next tournament is the New World Bisset Honda Golf Classic which will be on Saturday, May 15, teeing off at 10.30am.

Like many tournaments, this classic includes a non-golfers division which usually proves to be quite popular and attracts new players to the game, or just those who want to have a go for the day.
