Free literacy help at hand

- By EMMA JAMES

Adults needing help with their literacy skills but who cannot afford to enrol at a course can do it for free at the Cambridge Community House.

The programme, run through Literacy Waikato, offers help with English, reading and writing, maths, computers, driver licensing and more.

There is no participants.

Tutor Wendy Mortimer said the programme was aimed at those who had less than 80 credits at NCEA level 1, or those who needed help putting their CV or paperwork together.

‘‘We work with a lot of apprentices who come in; they’re good at their job but they need help with the paperwork.’’

The programme is on Thursday mornings at 10am and can be offered in individual lessons or in small groups.

If people couldn’t make that time there were other options available.

Mortimer said part of the problem was that often adults were embarrassed about their lack of literacy skills and did not speak up about it.

She encouraged people to reach out.

‘‘Don’t be embarrassed asking for help,’’ she said.

‘‘Everything we do is confidential.’’

Learners in the programme set their own goals and tutors organise the courses to meet those
