Wars remembered in music
Claims have been made that music helped to win both world wars — and a presentation in Hamilton next month by Operatunity Daytime Concerts will lend weight to that theory.
Certainly, there can be little doubt that music helped to inspire people, generate patriotism, make people laugh and provide comfort — all of which was seen as providing a significant contribution to the war effort.
Operatunity Daytime Concerts’ presentation of Memories are Made of This is their tribute to the centenary of Gallipoli and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The popular daytime series, which tours nationally eight times a year, will celebrate melody and memories with timeless classics, as well as famous war songs that commemorate these two most important historical milestones.
Wartime songs in the programme include White Cliffs of Dover, Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major, We’ll Meet Again, Keep the Home Fires Burning, and famous melodies like Wanting You from New Moon and Bluebird of Happiness plus fun songs like the Laughing Policeman.
The variety show will be one that invites the audience to sing along to, to laugh and most importantly to remember.
Memories are Made of This will tour 24 venues nationally from February 24 to March 27.
It will be at Hamilton’s Vision Church, Eastside, on Monday, March 16, starting at 11am.
