Countdown’s wall of support

- EMMA JAMES

Countdown Cambridge is taking part in a national campaign to send messages of support to the New Zealand Olympic Team.

They are giving customers the opportunity to write on stickers, which get added to a giant poster in store.

Senior Administrator Manager Chris Renata said they had already filled a couple of posters.

The checkout team have flag stickers that they have been handing out as people pay for their groceries.

‘‘They’re going to be sent to the Olympians so they can read all of the support from the customers,’’ she said.

It doesn’t matter how much or how little a customer spends, she said, anyone and everyone can write a message.

It has been going since Monday July 4, and will finish on Sunday July 24.

The messages will be shared with the Olympians through the NZOC Facebook page, and the Road to Rio Newsletter.

Five current world champions will spearhead the New Zealand cycling team to next month’s Rio Olympic Games, announced by the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

The world champion men’s team sprint trio of Eddie Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster – named last month along with female sprinter Natasha Hansen – will be joined in Rio by current time trial world champion Linda Villumsen.

The other world champion is mountain biker Sam Gaze, who recently took out the under-23 cross-country crown.

More than 10,000 athletes will compete in the first edition of the Olympic Games in Rio, South America.

The battle to qualify, which began in 2014, is still going on and concludes shortly before the Games, when the official list of athletes will be confirmed.

The Olympics begin on Friday, August 5 and conclude on Sunday, August 21.
