Fruit and veg co-op big success

- EMMA JAMES

An initiative set up to save Cambridge residents money on produce is growing rapidly.

The Baptist Church on Queen St started a co-op in June, which aimed to save people about 30 per cent on their fruit and vegetables.

Pastor Jonathan Ruthven said there were generally more than 150 orders a week.

‘‘When we first started I thought it would be amazing if we could reach that number by Christmas,’’ he said.

So far feedback from customers had been excellent.

‘‘Even though the produce is seasonal, there’s enough variety to make it interesting.

‘‘Like in the winter, they alternated potatos and kumera,’’ he said.

The initiative was classed as a social enterprise, which meant it was not-for-profit.

Sometimes people buy extra bags which were donated to people in need.

The church is also working with the Salvation Army to make sure fresh produce is available to everyone.

Ruthven wanted to extend his thanks to everyone who has made the effort to get involved with the co-op, especially the volunteers.
