Town heritage must be major focus

-

The Cambridge Edition invited local government election candidates standing for the Waipa District Council to speak about one important issue for next three-year term. In this column, we hear from Sue Milner.

A big welcome to all who have recently come to live and work in our great town.

Cambridge is a progressive community where there is a place for you, for all of us. It has been a privilege to serve on the Cambridge Community Board and Waipa District Council. I have lived and worked in Cambridge East for 20 years, this is one of our fastest growing areas. I see the issues we have on a daily basis, pressure on infrastructure from traffic, new housing and a rapidly increasing population.

I have brought these to Community Board and Council attention, and will continue to do so. There is a need for more safe walking and cycling routes around the town centre and further afield. We need more playgrounds for kids of all ages, where little ones can enjoy a swing and older ones can kick a Waipa District Council candidate Sue Milner. important that we keep it that way. Our sister city of Le Quesnoy in France is the Town of Oaks and we now have an Oak Arboretum in the Town Belt. I have been chairperson of the Council Heritage Committee for the last three years, looking after our built and natural heritage. Cambridge has a large amount of heritage assets such as lakes, trees and historic buildings particularly in the town centre. It is vital that owners are encouraged to care for them, it’s part of the Cambridge Character. Council owns the biggest Heritage Building in town, the Town Hall, which is in need of a restoration so that it will continue to be a vital, useful and very beautiful Heart of Cambridge. I see this as the next Council project after the pool. We have a great community and together we can make it an even greater community.
