Clarets step up to claim Cup win

-

Cambridge Clarets football team played in the end of season Jansen Park 9th grade 5-a-side Cup Tournament, where teams from all over the Waikato took part.

The Clarets had an unimpressive morning in the group stages winning one, losing two and drawing one. But the team was given a second chance by finishing fourth in the group and found their form in the Cup semi-finals in the afternoon.

In their semi-final they played West Hamilton, the in-form side and only team in the tournament who had won every game in the morning.

The Clarets raced into a 3-1 lead, but were pegged back to 3-2 to set up a nail-biting finish. The boys in red and white held on until the very end to set up a mouth-watering final against Hillcrest.

In conditions more suited to ducks than football, the Clarets had saved their best until last when they defeated Hillcrest (who were in 2nd place in the morning) in the final 2-0, by virtue of an own goal and a stunning strike from Theo Anthony.

At the sound of the final hooter the team and their hardy supporters erupted into celebration.

The team thanked Grant Heaslip, from Fisher Heaslip, who provided weatherproof cover for the team.
