Cambridge homes among top builds

- MIKE BAIN

Four Cambridge houses have been named in the country’s top 100 best builds as National Gold Reserve Finalists in the Registered Master Builders 2016 House of the Year.

David Kelly, Chief Executive of the Registered Master Builders Association said as the building boom continues the competition recognises what is possible.

‘‘Our builders consistently demonstrate excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail to ensure better homes, better workplaces, and ultimately better lives for all New Zealanders.’’

Daniel Klinkenberg, owner and founder of Hamilton-based Urban Homes, has plenty to smile about again this year having hit the double with both houses he entered being listed in the top 100.

The first, is the company’s 286 sq metre show-home in St Kilda, Cambridge constructed in part from recycled Christchurch bricks took out the GIB Show Home category win and received a gold award.

The other is the NuLook New Homes $650,000 to $1 million category.

This home also won the Bathroom excellence award.

The Hinuera stone home features covered trusses, gable rooftops with cedar finishings along with a lap-pool. Both homes now vie for supreme honours at this year’s national awards to be held in Auckland in November.

Since entering the Registered Master Buildings House of the Year competition in 2010 Urban Homes have been on the receiving end of either a gold and a category win each year.

Put all the accolades to one side the most rewarding moment for Klinkenburg comes down to just one key moment which is when he hands over the keys to his clients.

‘‘By the time we have done this we have created a strong relationship with them but also the great thing is seeing the property evolve as they put their personal mark on it,’’ Klinkenburg said.

The two Matamata companies Gudsell Designer Homes Ltd, and Vida Homes Ltd also have Cambridge built homes featuring in the Top 100.

The Gold Reserve National Finalists represent the top entrants from this year’s regional competitions, which were held in July and August.

They will now be re-judged to find the National Supreme House of the Year and National Supreme Renovation of the Year.

National winners will be announced on Saturday, November 26.
