Moxon Centre progressing

- MIKE BAIN

Building a new aged care facility in a Cambridge retirement village comes with its perks as construction workers on the new $14 million Moxon Centre are finding out.

Wet weather may be the ‘‘official reason’’ for work falling slightly behind schedule for construction of the new 24-room complex, but could the real reason be it’s the home baked morning teas provided to the workers from the ladies of the village?

Whatever the reason project manager Neville Davy and his crew’s progress is scrutinised daily by the half dozen residents, some former tradies who watch with interest at progress, shaking their heads in amazement at the speed buildings are constructed these days.

Davy, despite the questions from the residents, is confident the facility should still be ready for use in September 2017.

‘‘The tilt concrete slab walls are now in place and we already have some of the steel framing in place to brace the first and second floors,’’ he said.

This also will coincide with the concrete pour for the garage floor.

Once the external shell is in place, crews can start with the fit out of the three floor building and transform it from a concrete shell to homes suitable for the different levels of aged care.

The ground floor amenities will include cafe/dining rooms, an outdoor barbecue area, lounge and activity rooms, a residents’ shop and a hair salon, as well as administration offices.

The first floor caters for both rest home and hospitallevel care, comprising two households of 12 residents, with each household functioning like a [communal] home.

Each resident will have their own single room with ensuite.

On the upper floor, 11 independent living apartments will be available with options on the number of bedrooms on offer.

St Andrews Village Manager, Rachael Hall confirmed sales for the new apartments starting at $350,000 are progressing with good enquiries.

The Moxon Centre named in honour of Archbishop Sir David Moxon has been designed with the aim of reinventing how residential aged care is provided and creating a fully serviced village providing quality accommodation and services.
