Interior designer awarded

- EMMA JAMES

Cambridge’s Juliet Coleman has won the New Zealand House and Garden Interior of the Year award, in the bedroom category.

Her son Joshua’s room was the lucky one to be chosen.

‘‘It was just a plain white room and it’s always been in the back of my mind that I wanted to do something fun and exciting with it,’’ she said.

‘‘I started with the colour, a dark blue, and yellow which matched one his paintings he had chosen himself at a gallery.’’

She and her husband made the bed as well, out of pine slacks, with sisal rope that she got from a boat shop in Hamilton.

There is a trundler bed that fits underneath it nicely.

Because he is 14-yearsold, she wanted a design he wouldn’t grow out of.

‘‘It needed to be a sleep space, homework space and hang out place,’’ she said.

It’s the second year in a row Coleman has won an award. Last year she won the bathroom category in the same competition.

‘‘After the bathroom won last year I thought why not try again, and I was really happy to be selected, it’s a great feeling,’’ she said.

Her work is featured in the latest issue of the New Zealand House and Garden magazine.

‘‘It’s always been my dream to be featured in a nice magazine, so it’s really cool to have it in there.’’
