Seniors expo back by popular demand

- EMMA JAMES

Businesses and organisation which aim to help senior citizens and their families lead a happy life will gather in Cambridge soon to share their wisdom and knowledge.

It’s all part of the Expo for Seniors, a bi-ennial event which made it’s debut in 2015 at the Cambridge Baptist Church.

More than 200 people visited the event two years ago and it’s hoped more will attend when the expo returns this year on March 24.

Delia Edmeades and Helen Vaughan are the masterminds behind the expo, which they hope will continue to run every second year.

Last year they ran the Men’s Health Expo which was also very popular.

‘‘We just want people to be able to find out what’s available to them and make some plans as they’re ageing,’’ said Vaughan.

‘‘It’s a chance to think and talk about these things to family members so if something happens it’s not as big of a shock and doesn’t turn into a crisis.

‘‘We want people to age well, where they want. If things happen suddenly, sometimes decisions can be taken out of your hands,’’ she said.

The event will have all sorts of exhibitors available including Age Concern, Heart Foundation, Stroke Foundation, funeral homes, Mobile Pharmacists and many more.

‘‘There will also be some people there to help with things like loss of license, so people might think ‘oh, maybe it’s not so bad because there are other options’,’’ she said.

One of those is SureDrive, a new business to Cambridge that takes seniors out to familiarise them with the expressway and all the new road changes.

‘‘Sometimes people know the information is out there but they don’t know how to access it, but it will all be in one place for them here,’’ said Edmeades.

‘‘We expect up to 200 folk from the community to attend the expo, and we want to give them a warm welcome from a church which is in the heart of the community, and has a heart for their spiritual, physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

They believe their success at the 2015 expo was largely due to their team of volunteers who worked hard to make the event run smoothly for everyone involved.
