Coffee, no plastic please

A Waikato town is taking steps to reduce its use of plastic - by targeting coffee drinkers - for one month.

Nicola Turner of Mainstream Green in Cambridge has teamed up with Rouge Cafe for a special project to support Plastic Free July.

The cafe is giving free coffee to people who bring their own reusable cup from July 3 - 7.

She said it was a massive hit last year, and included the option to purchase a $10 reusable glass cup.

‘‘Reusable cups are high on the hit list of things anyone can do to be a bit more green,’’ said Turner.

‘‘I heard it quoted that on average we use a plastic bag for 12 minutes, and then they can be around in the environmen­t for about 500 years,’’ she said.

‘‘And they never really decompose, they just break down into smaller and smaller fragments.’’

She suggested changing one thing for Plastic Free July, and then look at something new.
