Sport and career studies
The New Zealand Institute of Sport (NZIS) is educating and growing champions with its high quality youth, industry, and tertiary programmes, supporting learners and athletes with their goals in the sports, fitness and recreation industry.
NZIS is located in Greenlane and at the Papatoetoe Sports Centre.
One student who has embraced all that NZIS has to offer to support her sporting and career aspirations is Marama Davis. Marama is an inspirational 18 year old who has achieved a great deal at a young age and still has great ambition for her future, both in sporting and her career.
She was a successful Youth Guarantee foundation student at NZIS last year completing her Certificate in Sports Studies Level 3 Programme, while her busy sporting schedule had her participate in the NZ Maori Women’s Rugby Team in Rome.
She was further selected to travel to Dubai late last year as a member of the NZ Women’s Sevens Team, which she says was an enriching experience and proud moment for her family, friends and NZIS.
In recent times Marama has also played for the NZ Open Women’s Touch Team in a series against Australia and represented various age grade regional teams as a Counties Manukau representative for touch and a representative of the Auckland Storm Women’s Rugby Team that won the NPC women’s finals last year.
Not only did Marama graduate from her course last year but she also received several sporting awards for her regional and national representative honours and was awarded the NZIS Sports Woman of the Year.
She is working hard to seek selection into the NZ Women’s Sevens Team for the Olympics in Rio 2016, but also hopes to have a career in the sport, fitness, and recreation industry, hence her decision to continue studying at NZIS.
