Check rules be­fore DIY work

Auck­lan­ders plan­ning to get stuck in to some DIY this sum­mer are be­ing ad­vised to get up to speed with build­ing rules and reg­u­la­tions well be­fore they get their tools out.

Auck­land Coun­cil build­ing con­trol man­ager Ian McCormick wants to see keen home handy­men tak­ing the nec­es­sary steps to en­sure their work is safe and any ef­fects on oth­ers or the en­vi­ron­ment are ad­dressed.

Prop­erty own­ers with trees must find out if they need re­source con­sent to trim or chop them down.

‘‘A lot of work does re­quire con­sent un­der leg­is­la­tion, district or re­gional plans so we do en­cour­age peo­ple to check with McCormick says.

‘‘Even if con­sent is not re­quired DIY work must still com­ply with the Build­ing Act, the build­ing code and other rel­e­vant leg­is­la­tion.’’
