Check rules before DIY work

Aucklander­s planning to get stuck in to some DIY this summer are being advised to get up to speed with building rules and regulation­s well before they get their tools out.

Auckland Council building control manager Ian McCormick wants to see keen home handymen taking the necessary steps to ensure their work is safe and any effects on others or the environmen­t are addressed.

Property owners with trees must find out if they need resource consent to trim or chop them down.

‘‘A lot of work does require consent under legislatio­n, district or regional plans so we do encourage people to check with McCormick says.

‘‘Even if consent is not required DIY work must still comply with the Building Act, the building code and other relevant legislatio­n.’’
