At Roskill Union and Com­mu­nity Health cen­tre the ini­tial join­ing fee is just $25 for adults and $15 for six to 18 year olds. Un­der sixes are free.

Pri­mary and sec­ondary school stu­dents pay noth­ing for med­i­cal vis­its; adults pay $10 and su­per­an­nu­i­tants are charged just $5.

Reg­is­tered and funded pa­tients get ac­cess to var­i­ous free ser­vices, in­clud­ing an in­ter­preter, di­a­betes man­age­ment, ac­cess to a smok­ing ces­sa­tion clinic; women pa­tients be­ing el­i­gi­ble for free cer­vi­cal smears.

All en­rolled pa­tients re­ceive dis­counted af­ter­hours White Cross med­i­cal care. ‘‘This is a huge sav­ing for pa­tients with­out ac­cess to pri­vate health in­sur­ance,’’ man­ager Rajnish Sethi says. ‘‘Our range of ser­vices in­cludes mid­wife, physio, phar­macy and lab fa­cil­i­ties.’’

The im­pres­sive ar­ray of ser­vices and gen­eral med­i­cal care of­fered by the com­mu­nity-owned, char­ity-based health clinic can be ac­cessed by any­one liv­ing in Mt Roskill or sur­round­ing ar­eas.

It serves a large mul­ti­cul­tural group of pa­tients in­clud­ing Maori, Euro­pean, Pa­cific Is­land, In­dian, Asian and refugee pop­u­la­tions.

Cen­tre staff are just as cul­tur­ally di­verse with health pro­fes­sion­als from Bangladesh, Sey­chelles China, In­dia, Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

Roskill Union and Com­mu­nity Health is part of the National Hauora Coali­tion and is a mem­ber of Health­care Aotearoa.
