Quality care for the senior years
If you are looking for an environment that will provide the best care possible in the senior years – for yourself or a loved one – a good place to start is Blockhouse Bay Home.
The essence of this residence for older adults is to provide a safe and caring environment in which special needs are met. Under new management, Blockhouse Bay Home has been newly renovated and witnessed a qualitative improvement in the level of its services and facilities.
‘‘Our team comprises industry qualified experienced staff who understand all aspects of working with the elderly and disabled,’’ registered diversional therapist Mandy says. ‘‘Our approach is holistic, looking after people in both a physical and emotional sense.’’
Mandy says the staff are trained to cater for seniors from diverse ethnic groups. The kitchen, for instance, turns out delicious cuisines including New Zealand European, Chinese and Indian dishes.
Residents are encouraged to pursue their own interests and enjoy hobbies, socialise and interact with the local community, and take advantage of activities that keep their body and mind fit. Daily trips to diverse locations including shops and beaches also add excitement.
Betty, 94, a New Windsor local for more than 40 years, moved here four years ago after her husband’s death. It is a decision she and her family have never regretted. Although sprightly and possessing a sharp sense of humour, she nevertheless requires extra care because of failing vision. ‘‘I enjoy every moment,’’ she says in between her knitting, which she does by feel.
‘‘The staff are unique, nothing is too much for them,’’ she adds.
Betty, who is originally from Dargaville, says Blockhouse Bay Home offers her the freedom to invite family to visit – something encouraged as much as poss- ible, so residents can socialise, especially during festivals, anniversaries and cultural days.
Blockhouse Bay House is located at 39 Batkin Rd, New Windsor. They have two other homes – Briargate Dementia Care in Bayview on the North Shore, and Abbey Heights in Massey.
