Lane altered

Auckland Transport, with no announceme­nt or warning signs whatsoever, altered the centre lane of New North Rd (when approachin­g the St Lukes Rd intersecti­on) to a straight through only lane by painting out the turn arrow on the road surface.

Some weeks later, after the Central Leader’s July 3 article was published, a single mobile sign advising of no right turn from the centre lane was installed down by Rocket Park.

This has had mixed success with some motorists still turning right from the centre lane.

The remainder are queuing in the right lane sometimes using the centre median strip as far back as the level of the Baptist church.

This median strip is routinely used by cars seeking refuge when making right turns across two lanes of traffic into the Baptist church, preschool, doctors rooms or the recreation centre.

Where are turning cars going to wait safely if the centre median is blocked by cars waiting to turn right at the lights into St Lukes Rd?

Another safety concern is the fact that there are a number of residentia­l driveways on St Lukes Rd very close to the intersecti­on.

Turning left into a driveway here is made more hazardous if you’ve turned the corner on the inside lane.
