Fifty golden years for happy pair

- By KELLY DENNETT

A promise made nearly 60 years ago turned out to be a premonition of good things to come.

Glendene couple John and Pauline Hewitt celebrated their golden anniversary on Saturday.

Mrs Hewitt, now 68, remembers the first time she spoke to her husband of 50 years.

After meeting through their parents at the Pt Chevalier Sailing Club a 12-year-old Miss Dobson was promised by Mr Hewitt that he would one day marry her.

That promise was fulfilled just six years later with Miss Dobson marrying Mr Hewitt when she was 18 years old at Avondale Baptist Church.

Mr Hewitt proposed at Miss Dobson’s sister’s wedding and six weeks later the pair married with Mrs Hewitt wearing a grown made of delustred satin she’d sewn herself.

Following the nuptials the pair moved to Herne Bay but returned to West Auckland where they grew up.

They went on to have four children, Heidi, Edward, Jeremy and Ricci and have 10 grandchildren.

After running a guitar and fiddle shop in Dominion Rd the pair retired five years ago.

These days they like to spend time with their family relaxing as much as possible.
